About/ Student Membership

Student and Trainee Program

Medical students are the future of medicine, and the clinicians entering training today have a unique opportunity to practice weight-inclusive care from the very beginning of their careers. AWSIM is committed to supporting the next generation of weight-inclusive physicians, and student membership is a core part of who we are.

Student Clinicians Are Welcome Here

Medical students and students in affiliated disciplines are welcome as members of AWSIM. Student membership is complimentary because we believe that financial barriers should never stand between a trainee and a professional community that shares their values. As a student member, you have access to AWSIM’s member resources, forums, discounted events, and the broader network of practicing clinicians who are doing this work every day.

Our Partnership with MSSI

AWSIM is proud to partner with Medical Students for Size Inclusivity (MSSI), a student-led collaborative raising awareness about the harms of weight discrimination in medical education and healthcare. MSSI operates independently and in its own voice — and AWSIM supports that work as a complementary professional home for students who want to stay connected to a broader clinical community as they train and eventually practice.

MSSI Resources

Through MSSI, students have access to a growing library of practical tools and resources developed by and for medical trainees. Past projects have included:

  • Monthly Newsletter
  • Lecture Analysis Tool
  • GLP1 Informed Consent Resource
  • Bariatric Surgery Informed Consent Resource
  • Weight Centric vs Weight Inclusive Healthcare Chart
  • Weight Inclusive Healthcare Guide

Mentorship and Advising

One of the most valuable things AWSIM offers students is a connection to experienced, practicing clinicians. AWSIM physician members serve as advisors and mentors to students and MSSI chapters, providing guidance, clinical perspective, and the kind of collegial support that is hard to find elsewhere in medical training. If you are a student looking for a mentor, or a physician interested in advising a chapter, we want to hear from you.
